What are the requirements for joining DAP?
DAP was created in part to provide a meaningful service opportunity for Pre-Dietetics students at BYU. However, we happily invite students from all majors to apply. Completion of NDFS 100 (or similar nutrition/health class) is preferred. But the only thing we absolutely require is a real love for health and a desire to teach elementary school kids how to live a healthy lifestyle.
How do I apply?
Send us an email at [email protected] or fill out the volunteer form found on the "About DAP" page. We accept applications during the first couple of weeks of fall and winter semester, but if you only find out about us in the middle of a semester, send us an email anyways! We always appreciate new volunteers who want to help with lesson planning or can be put on an "on call" list for current volunteers that need a substitute.
When is the deadline for sumbitting a volunteer form if i want to participate for a full semester?
Volunteer forms must be submitted by the end of the third week (Friday) of each semester. If you miss this deadline, you can be put on a waiting list for next semester or an on-call list for the current semester. Email us at [email protected] for more info.
What is the commitment?
Volunteers who apply at the beginning of the semester must commit to teaching for a full semester. Our program runs for 8 weeks each semester, but we will have volunteer meetings before and after the teaching period. We are typically finished with everything several weeks before finals. Volunteers teach for once a week for 8 weeks, and lessons usually take 15-30 minutes to teach.
